Fighting for Quality Education and School Safety in Sunrise

Updated: Aug 16, 2024

As a former two-term PTA President and Chair of the Sunrise Education Advisory Board, I have always been deeply committed to the welfare of our children and the success of our schools. With two children who grew up in Sunrise public schools, I understand firsthand the importance of supporting our teachers and ensuring our schools are safe and nurturing environments.

Recognizing and Supporting Our Teachers

Before I was elected, I saw a need to recognize the incredible work our teachers do every day, just as we honor our hero police officers, firefighters, and city employees. Teachers are the backbone of our community, shaping the minds and futures of our children. That's why, 14 years ago, I proposed the "Teacher of the Month" program, which has since become a cherished tradition at our City Commission Meetings. Every month, we honor a dedicated teacher from our local schools, celebrating

their hard work and commitment to educating our children.

Prioritizing School Safety

While recognizing our teachers is essential, ensuring the safety of our students and staff is equally critical. Before I was elected, there was a proposal to eliminate the full-time school resource officer (SRO) program in our eight elementary schools. This program was vital for maintaining a secure environment, and I knew we couldn’t afford to lose it.

I organized a grassroots movement of parents and students to oppose this plan, and together, we succeeded in saving our SROs. But the fight didn’t end there. Shortly after I became Mayor, the proposal to cut the SRO program resurfaced. Drawing on my financial expertise, I meticulously reviewed the budget and identified the necessary funds to preserve this essential program.

Over the past 14 years, I have continually fought to protect the full-time SRO program in all our schools. Our well-trained SROs are not just there to respond to potential dangers but also to build positive relationships with students, offering a friendly high-five or a listening ear when needed. I am proud to say that our Sunrise SROs are among the best in Broward County.

Leading the Charge for Safer Schools

The tragic events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School were a stark reminder of the importance of school safety. In response, I was asked to chair the countywide Broward League of Cities School and Community Safety Taskforce. We worked swiftly and diligently to produce a comprehensive report outlining significant changes to improve school safety and protect our students, teachers, and staff.

In addition to this work, I have also chaired the Broward PTA School Resource Officer Committee, using my platform to advocate for stronger protections in our schools. My dedication to education and public safety has been recognized and supported by the Broward Teachers Union, the Broward Principals and Assistant Principals Association, the Sunrise Fraternal Order of Police, and the Broward County Police Benevolent Association.

A Commitment to the Future

My work is far from over. I am committed to continuing the fight for better quality schools and ensuring that our children, teachers, and school staff are always protected. With your support, I can keep advocating for the changes and protections our community needs.

I am asking for your vote so that together, we can continue to build a brighter and safer future for all the children of Sunrise.
